The innovative club for playwrights, helping writers take their work to the next level.
To apply, please send two 10 minute scripts to info@directorscuttheatre.co.uk or fill out the form below.
The Writers Club is the only club for writers in the UK, and Europe, of its kind, working closely with directors and professional actors. A place that offers playwrights a space to grow, to continue and diversify their training, to be challenged and inspired through innovative exercises within club sessions that enable them to discover new potentials in a supportive community that celebrates their authentic and unique voice.
WORKSHOPS
The Writers Club is a unique club for playwrights, where writers come together to develop their scripts, learn, share and inspire. Writers take part in exercises each time they attend the writers club, and write a short play according to the brief given that is shared with the group for feedback. The writers work is then workshopped the following week with our actors and directors in their workshops! Workshops are run by Artistic Director Heather Ward who has led writers workshops for the last 15+ years with years of experience in dramaturgy, working with new and experienced writers developing scripts and producing new writing events. Established playwrights within the industry will also be hired to run workshops sharing their experience, tips and advice in script development and life as a writer within the theatre industry.
Rehearsed Readings
Have your work read out by professional actors from The Actors Club at rehearsed reading night Write to Right; helping writers to get it right, where you will gain feedback in order to develop your work and further its potential.
Cross-connection week - free workshops with actors and directors
Cross-connection week is an opportunity for writers to attend directors and actors workshops to share/swap skills and develop a deeper understanding of each others craft. Those all important partnerships with directors in the industry are what can help take a play from page to stage. The Writers Club is in association with The Directors Club where directors and writers connect and can form important partnerships and collaborations that can open up the opportunity for the development and production of their work.
We partner writers with professional actors to write bespoke monologues and short scenes for the actors they are matched with. This gives writers experience in developing a story using the actors as stimulus and inspiration and connects actors and writers together, which can often lead to future collaborations or the development of a project. These pieces are shared at the end of term in-front of an audience.
Writers have the opportunity to submit work that will be rehearsed and staged in a final showcase. The writers will receive guidance and feedback on what Artistic Director Heather Ward is looking for when choosing successful scripts for the showcase and additional showcases, in which writers are invited and encouraged to apply.
As well as all of the above Director’s Cut also host and organise many other events and activities including free mentoring sessions, community social events such as picnics, open mic nights, theatre trips, and monthly newsletters advertising your shows and achievements. As a member of The Writer’s Club you also recieve discounted tickets to certain plays produced by our theatre partners.
our scheme that connects artists on projects to workshop a script or idea
We encourage artists within our artistic community to connect and work together. We match actors, writers and directors on a project to workshop it, facilitated by one of our directors. Many projects have gone on to have a future life from one of these workshops! Open Stage is supported by theatres Southwark Playhouse, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Rose Kingston, Park Theatre and Pleasance Theatre to support our writers, directors and actors, by providing rehearsal space every month for them to workshop a script, idea or technique they are developing as practitioners. More on the scheme can be found HERE.
Criteria: The application process for The Writer's Club is competitive - we look for playwrights who illustrate skill and unique ideas, as The Writer’s Club is a space that provides writers with exercises that will push and challenge you, it’s not a space to learn the basics of playwrighting, it’s a space for playwrights to take their work to the next level. We ask for two 10 minute examples of either short plays or extracts from full length plays to be reviewed for the application process.
Please note membership is for one group - London, Brighton or online (but there is flexibility should you need to swap sometimes).
