The Director's Club is a home for stage directors to meet, train, find plays they love to direct, playwrights who inspire them, and talented actors to collaborate with.

The Directors Club is the only club for theatre directors in the UK, and Europe, of its kind. A place that offers training, through a supportive and strong growing community which enables theatre makers an abundance of opportunities to discover their potential in a practical environment.

Director’s Cut runs The Director’s Club for new, emerging and experienced directors who want to refine their skills through learning, experience, development and community.

What’s included?

8 workshops with The Director’s Club a term

WORKSHOPSPractitioner and Artistic Director Heather Ward runs workshops with members of The Director’s Club as well as hiring professional directors and practitioners to run workshops to share their knowledge and experience. Not only is this a great way to learn and develop skills, it is also an excellent opportunity to connect with directors working in the industry.

Previous workshops have included directors Mike Leigh, Dominic Cooke, Stephen Unwin, and Rikki Beadle-Blair to name a few.

The Director’s Club is designed to nurture talent, create a space to grow and provide new Director’s with a strong support network.  The group meet regularly, giving each director the opportunity to run exercises, workshops and direct within the group, to provide and receive feedback and to gain and share skills, techniques, and experience.

Directors in The Director’s Club get the opportunity to work on scripts written by members of The Writers Club and direct professional actors from The Actors Club in our Write To Right nights, as well as many other projects, including workshops and events that connect artists across these clubs.

Cross-connection week - free actors/writers workshops
Cross-connection week is an opportunity for directors, actors and writers to attend each others workshops at no additional cost, to meet each other and to run exercises with the groups, developing skills and experimenting with ideas in a safe space.

Direct in showcase

Members of The Director’s Club get the opportunity to work with new writers, professional actors, and direct in The Director’s Club Showcase and other additional showcases. In London directors direct in theatres such as Southwark Playhouse, in Brighton at Komedia, the winner of best venue in the South East and West of England.

Community & support

As well as all of the above Director’s Cut also host and organise many other events and activities including free mentoring sessions, community social events such as picnics, open mic nights and theatre trips, monthly newsletters advertising your shows and achievements. As a member of The Director’s Club you also recieve discounted tickets to selected plays and discounted drinks at Southwark Playhouse bar.

Open Stage - Free rehearsal space and opportunity to direct in our open stage programme at top theatres across London

Our scheme that connects artists on projects to workshop a script or idea
We encourage artists within our artistic community to connect and work together. We match actors, writers and directors on a project to workshop it, facilitated by one of our directors.  Many projects have gone on to have a future life from one of these workshops!  Open Stage scheme is supported by theatres Southwark Playhouse, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Rose Kingston, Park Theatre and Pleasance Theatre to support directors within The Director’s Club by providing rehearsal space every month for them to workshop a script, idea or technique they are developing as practitioners.  More on the scheme can be found HERE.

Who is it for?

Criteria: Theatre director’s at any stage of their career, whether new and emerging or experienced, The Director's Club is a training ground where everyone has something to offer and something to learn.  We recognise that there aren’t many opportunities for director training and development and this is a unique space that allows directors to develop their practice and expand thier network.

Where?

London

  • We are based at Southwark Playhouse for directors club workshops
  • Our main showcase is at Southwark Playhouse.
  • Rehearsed readings have been held at theatres such as Park Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Pleasance Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East.

Brighton

  • We are based at various different studios in Brighton for our directors club workshops
  • Our main showcase takes place at Komedia
  • Rehearsed readings are an opportunity for Brighton based members to cross-connect with our London community and take part at one of our connected theatres in London. Rehearsed readings have been held at theatres such as Park Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Pleasance Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East.

To apply for The Director's Club we just wish to see your CV detailing your directing/creative experience and a few words on why you would like to join the club.

Membership fee is £250 for your first term.  For returning or renewing members, membership is discounted to £195 a term. Many of our members have journeyed with us for years, and each term spaces become available for new members. Places are limited so apply now to avoid disappointment. Testimonials can be found HERE.
