I joined Directors Cut in 2022. I am a film director and craved more exposure to the process of theatre making. A writer that I was working with suggested Directors Cut and, despite massive imposter impulses, I jumped and was immediately thrown into a wonderful mix of talent, support and connection. Directors Cut, the challenges that we are exposed to and all of the friendships and collaborations that have flourished from this have taken my creative life to a new level. I am forever grateful to Heather for creating such a magnificent opportunity — and thankful to the members for bringing a most welcome spark into my life.
I wouldn't have put on any of my full-length plays without Director's Cut. I wouldn't have even written them. I also probably wouldn't know anyone in London. My exposure to theatre was pretty much meh before joining Director's Cut Theatre. Since, I've been able to turn my first draft into 5 star and 6 times award nominated tour. Director's Cut has been fantastic for me on both a creative and social level. Over the past few years I have learned more about writing for theatre, been able to network with actors and directors, with whom I've worked outside the club, and made plenty of friends! My only regret about DCT is I hadn’t joined it sooner. Great to be part of such an incredible collective of diverse talent & creativity. It’s turbo charged my acting skills & confidence. I joined the Director’s Cut as an actor in 2017 and 9 years later am still a part of the DC community. From day one I felt supported without any fear or judgment. I am also an artist/painter and after Heather, the AD, discovered this she invited me to paint live on stage for the show ‘Art From the Heart’, now a termly showcase that has been on Southwark Playhouse and Park Theatre. Heather really gets to know her community and goes above and beyond to shine a light on artists talents, encourage and celebrate them. I had the opportunity to grow within the Director’s Cut community whilst I always felt supported and encouraged up to this day. I’m so happy and grateful that this community exists and looking forward to future creative adventures.
Joining Director’s Cut is honestly the best creative decision I’ve ever made and I can’t recommend it enough! I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to explore new work within professional theatres and be part of the most collaborative and supportive community. I remember being both thrilled and terrified when I got accepted into the writers club at Director's Cut - I thought I'd be so out of place and had only just started writing plays a few months prior. I have never felt so welcome, accepted and more able to be myself in an environment like this, and my confidence and enjoyment of what I do has grown so so much. I will never forget my first day walking into Director’s Cut Writer’s club with total imposter syndrome - almost instantly I found ‘my’ people and I could not be more grateful for the nurturing and inspiring community I am so proud to be a part of. Director’s Cut grew my confidence and gave me encouragement like I have never experienced before, and as a result I am now about to open my first full-length fringe play and have multiple other projects in progress across theatre, film and radio. Directors Cut was THE community that opened up the world of directing for me when I first stepped into it as someone with zero performance background. Through it I made a huge group of friends and collaborators and learned so many skills and went on to join the Writers and Actors groups too. I joined Director’s Cut as pandemic restrictions were lifting. It was the first creative group I joined after lockdown, and having moved to the UK from Canada, I found the London theatre scene intimidating to navigate. Joining Director’s Cut was one of the best decisions I made—it helped me find my community. Through the clubs and events, I met writers and actors who have since become collaborators and friends. Those connections opened doors and helped me find my feet as an artist in a new country. This is such a special company, and I owe so much to Heather and the community she has built. I had tried various classes and workshops as I restarted my acting career after a long break. Director’s Cut was recommended to me by a professional in the industry and it has been such a wonderful experience. So much more than classes- with rehearsed readings, R&D and showcase and networking opportunities. The key is that it’s a supportive place to find people, to go out into the world and do the work. I did four terms in a row then had to take a break of a term for work, but I’m back. Looking forward to starting again in a couple of weeks ❤️

I found Directors Cut in 2018, the year after I’d graduated from drama school as a mature student at the age of 52. It was a shot in the dark. I was very ‘green’. Finding a network like this, with the standard of workshops provided and the chance to work with fellow actors, writers and directors to gain professional theatre credits (at Southwark Playhouse and Park Theatre) was a wonderful opportunity. In this community over the years, I’ve been allowed to fail, sometimes spectacularly, but also to grow and gain that confidence to succeed. Through the connections I’ve made, I’ve been in numerous fringe plays, and with those credits have had doors opened to stage casting directors leading to two professional tours and I am now in my third West End role. DC is still part of my ‘go to’ for stage craft. I’m signed up for next term and have just been part of a specially invited audience to watch a private viewing of a final rehearsal of ‘When it happens to You’ at Park Theatre starring Amanda Abbington, before its New York residency. This invite came from Heather, the director and founder of.. DC.
Director’s Cut has given me so much. Weekly workshops, R&Ds, rehearsed readings, showcases, and countless opportunities outside of the club (thanks to the incredible network of artists involved across the board). I owe so much to Director’s Cut. 11 years ago I was a new mum with my first daughter and looking for a safe space to continue to hone my craft and meet other creatives. The community was also in its in infancy and I’ve had the pleasure of being part of its growth over the last 11 years or so. I’ve met lifelong friends, made invaluable professional connections, booked paid work, developed new projects, and yes, had loads of fun. Whenever I meet another actor looking for a creative community to get involved with I ALWAYS recommend Director’s Cut. Director’s Cut is a unique “artistic workout”. The creativity flows every week, even when I think it isn’t a good day. Apart from the great artistic outcome, there are elements that I really value and enjoy: The big diversity in the groups. The chance to connect with other artists to develop theatre projects. The opportunity to create a community, because we all know how challenging it is to find a social group in the lovely London, and this place welcomes everyone, embracing us through the art, in a respectful, kind and friendly environment.I am very grateful for this community and the passion their founders put in.

I joined Director's Cut in 2019, to continue growing my craft when I first moved to London and it has been more than I could dream of- I found a community and a home. Proudly I have been part of the community here for 7 years, it saw my sanity through covid and Heather encouraged and inspired me to start writing professionally. Thanks to this wonderful place I have written successful film scripts and plays and performed with incredible theatre and film companies. Cant say how greatfull I am and how lost I would be without it❤️

I can not recommend The Directors Club enough. Life can be lonely as a Director and the club is a wonderful place for support, to share ideas and get new ones, both from fellow members and the amazing visiting Directors who come to the club to work with us – not to mention working closely with the Actors and Writers Clubs. It is quite simply fantastic!
The inspiring family environment that Heather has managed to create is a great credit to her, although it’s no surprise given her unwavering support and generosity.

Heather Ward and her team have created something special in the Actor’s Club and Director’s Cut Theatre company as a whole and it has been done so with verve, imagination and an enthusiasm that is as infectious as it is admirable. I have now completed four terms at the Director’s Cut Theatre’s Writers Club and I can honestly say it has revolutionised my life as a writer and offered me way more opportunities than I imagined it would. As a writer who has done a 3 year MA and various courses and is relatively experienced I still found the sessions educational and stimulating. Heather herself is a force of nature and a truly inspiring, creative, yet business-savvy individual. She has great connections within the theatre industry and works tirelessly to help promote her club members’ works.

There's a feeling of togetherness in the DC community beyond what you'd get on a course or in a discussion group and let's face it: In a business rife with rejection it's refreshing to be part of a team that draws on the talents of all of its members every term, always with the aim to create great theatre!
Joining the Actor's Club and Director's Cut has been one of the smartest decisions I have made since leaving drama school. It's given me so many opportunities to get up on my feet and practice my craft. They have offered me a community of passionate, generous, like-minded artists which has also subsequently led to several collaborations outside of Director's Cut. I am so grateful for the platform they have provided for actors such as myself to showcase our work to the public alongside some of the UK's most promising writers and directors. Heather's focused and ambitious leadership has been phenomenal. In Heather, I doubt that you will find a more dedicated, warm, and supportive spirit in the London theatre world.
Joining Director's Cut is without a doubt the best decision I've made as a writer. My plays went from being sat, unfinished on my computer to being performed on stages all over the UK (and Mumbai!). The impact of the club has even extended to my day job writing for television (BBC, ITV, Dave). I can't recommend it highly enough.

In the two years I have been a member of Director's Cut, I have seen my directing career take off and my confidence increase hugely. I've made numerous contacts through the group and developed a very strong working relationship with one writer in particular - leading to various projects and, again, meeting all important contacts.
After I moved to London from Australia I was really missing my artistic community back home. One of the reasons I moved was to make new connections and surround myself with inspiring people. I knew I needed support from other artists if I wanted to make strides in my acting career. I’m sooooo grateful I heard about DCT! I’ve found everything I was looking for - community, opportunities to push myself, and most importantly FUN! I’ve met so many amazing people who’ve been part of the clubs for many years, and I can’t wait to be one of them 🥹 So excited for the next term to start. I can’t speak highly enough of being part of Director's Cut Theatre Company (DC to its friends!). I joined the actors club by recommendation in 2020 just after graduating Rose Bruford as a mature student of 46 after raising my kids. It’s allowed me to grow, learn how to work with directors and writers and create projects of my own. I’ve written, acted, helped with R&Ds, produced 2 award winning short films and now have my first few TV credits so I can safely say I’m building a creative career, thanks to Heather and this wonderful community! If you’re thinking of joining, just do it! Honestly, I’m super grateful! You just don’t know where it might lead! 🙏

Sometimes, all you need is the right community to remind you what you’re capable of. After taking a long break away from acting, Director's Cut helped me rebuild my confidence and fall back in love with performing. But it’s given me so much more than that. I have been in the Writer’s and Director’s Groups over the last couple of years. I have tried a lot of different theatre and writing groups, and Director’s Cut is by far the best I have found. The community is supportive, collaborative and full of talent.
