The Writer’s Club
THE INNOVATIVE CLUB FOR WRITERS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE DIRECTORS CLUB
The Writers Club is the only club for writers in the UK, and Europe, of its kind, working closely with professional actors, directors and producers. A place that offers training, through a supportive and strong growing community which enables theatre makers an abundance of opportunities to discover their potential in a practical environment.
Fortnightly on Monday evenings 6pm – 8pm or Saturdays 11am – 1pm at Calder Bookshop & Theatre, Waterloo, London. Please note membership is for one group (either Monday or Saturday, not both days, but there is flexibility should you need to swap sometimes).
BE A PART OF AN ARTISTIC COMMUNITY
The Writers Club is a unique club for playwrights, where writers come together to develop their scripts, learn, share and inspire.
FORM PARTNERSHIPS AND LEARN FROM DIRECTORS
Those all important partnerships with directors in the industry are what can help take a play from page to stage. The Writers Club is in association with The Directors Club where there is opportunity for directors and writers to connect to form important partnerships and collaborations in order to open up opportunity for the development and production of their work.
Have your work read out by professional actors from The Actors Club at rehearsed readings Write to Right; helping writers to get it right, where you will gain feedback in order to develop your work to its potential.
SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING FROM PROFESSIONALS
The Writers Club runs bi-weekly on Monday evenings 6pm – 8pm or Saturdays 11am – 1pm in London. Workshops are run by Artistic Director Heather Ward who has led Director’s Cut for the last 6 years with years of experience in dramaturgy, working with new and experienced writers developing scripts and producing new writing events. Established playwrights within the industry will also be hired to run workshops sharing their experience, tips and advice in script development and life as a writer within the theatre industry.
ENCOMPASS – OUR SCHEME THAT CONNECTS ARTISTS ON PROJECTS TO WORKSHOP A SCRIPT, OR IDEA
We encourage artists within our artistic community to connect and work together. We match actors, writers and directors on a project to workshop it, facilitated by one of our directors. Many projects have gone on to have a future life from one of these workshops! Encompass scheme is supported by theatres Southwark Playhouse, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Rose Kingston, Park Theatre and Pleasance Theatre to support directors within The Director’s Club by providing rehearsal space every month for them to workshop a script, idea or technique they are developing as practitioners. More on the scheme can be found HERE.
WRITE FOR PROFESSIONAL ACTORS
We partner writers with professional actors to write bespoke monologues and short scenes for the actors they are matched with. This give writers experience of developing a story using the actors as stimulus and inspiration and connects actors and writers together, which can often lead to future collaborations or the development of a project.
WRITE FOR SHOWCASES AT SOUTHWARK PLAYHOUSE
Writers in The Writers Club will receive guidance and feedback on what Artistic Director Heather Ward is looking for when choosing successful scripts for The Directors Club Showcase and additional showcases, in which writers are invited and encouraged to apply.
